A year of fundraising by the Chairman of Anglesey County Council has raised over 10 thousand pounds for a local 'end of life' charity.
Councillor Dylan Rees, who nominated St David’s Hospice as his Chairman’s Charity for the year, was keen to support a local Hospice care project having seen the valuable work that the Hospice in Llandudno and the Hospice at Home service carry out.
The charity’s ambitious plans will see a satellite unit to be located within Penrhos Stanley Hospital, Holyhead in the not-so-distant future.
The project is currently going through the NHS procurement process and it is now out to tender with contractors until the end of July.
All monies raised towards the new hospice will go towards the building and staffing costs to ensure that the highest standard of inpatient care can be given to patients in a safe and home-from-home environment.
The Chairman’s total £10,502 was raised through a variety of activities, including a collection at the Chairman’s Civic Service, proceeds from the Charity Concert at Ysgol Gyfun, Llangefni and the 12-day sponsored walk around the 130-mile-long Anglesey Coastal path.
Councillor Rees said: “It’s been a privilege to raise funds for this most worthy cause and the establishment of the new four-bed satellite unit at Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley will bring about a much-needed facility on the island.
“I would like to thank everyone involved for their support and in particular Hogans who sponsored my Chairman’s concert and Eaton Electrical Ltd who sponsored my charity walk.”
Councillor Rees added: “The walk was a fantastic experience as the coastal path falls within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which covers 95% of the coast. Some of the scenery was truly spectacular and it is evident why the path is such a vital part of Anglesey’s tourism.
“My thanks to all those who joined me along the way, especially the dedicated enthusiasts who accompanied me for the last leg over Holyhead Mountain during Storm Hannah!”
