The achievements of over 20 of Coleg Llandrillo's outstanding further education students were celebrated at a glitzy ceremony in Llandudno recently, during one of the highlights of the college calendar.

Coleg Llandrillo held its prestigious annual 'Achievers' Awards' ceremony to recognise the accomplishments of students throughout all academic areas from across the colleges' three campuses: Rhos-on-Sea, Rhyl and Abergele.

The victorious students, chosen from thousands of potential candidates across all programme areas, each received an engraved glass trophy and a cheque for £100, thanks to the generous sponsorship of business people and organisations.

College principal Lawrence Wood hosted the packed event at Venue Cymru, and Dafydd Evans, CEO of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, was the guest of honour. Grŵp Llandrillo Menai comprises Coleg Llandrillo, Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor.

A student from Llandudno enjoyed triple success at the 2019 Coleg Llandrillo 'Achievers Awards' ceremony. 20-year-old Konrad Jastrzebski proved to be the star of the show as he scooped three prizes - including the overall 'Student of the Year' award.

The Computing and Media student, who moved to Wales from his native Poland when he was 14 years old, was praised for having a "brilliant" academic year.

Speaking on winning his awards, Konrad said: "I knew I was going to win one beforehand and then got told that I was going to be given two when I arrived here tonight.

"The third one ('Student of the Year') was a complete shock though, especially as I was up against all the other students. I'm very happy, but very surprised."

Other award winners on the night were: Rosie Davies from Chester (Sports and Public Services); Rachel Eagleton from Llandudno (Abergele Award); Mark Hughes from Denbigh (Hwb Denbigh); Iarl Sapong from Rhyl (Rhyl Sixth); David Hughes from Rhuallt (Rhyl Technology); Tammy Moxon from Colwyn Bay (Rhyl Vocational); Will Bradbury from Prestatyn (School Link Award); Ethan Quinn from Llandudno (Entrepreneur of the Year); Connor Fitzgerald from Old Colwyn (Independent Living Skills); Dalton Weir from Abergele (Hospitality and Tourism); Kim Steele from Llandudno (Health and Care); Jessica Beardmore from Trefriw (Hair and Beauty); Elliott Morris from St Asaph (Engineering); Christopher Dorgan from Abergele (Creative Arts); Billie Bennett from Gwespyr (Construction); Grace Jones from Denbigh (Access and Business) and Tiernan Hughes from St Asaph (A-levels)

There were also presentations to the colleges' football students who were awarded Welsh sporting caps after representing their country this year.

They were Callum Roberts from Rhyl, Daniel Roberts (Colwyn Bay) and Luke Wilmot (Kinmel Bay).

A four-piece band from Coleg Llandrillo's Music Technology department entertained the crowd at Llandudno with a spectacular show with an eclectic mix of songs.

Coleg Llandrillo principal Lawrence Wood said on the night: "During the evening we will recognise the accomplishments of around 20 of our further education students.

"These students have been selected out of over 10,000 further education students who are currently enrolled on courses at Coleg Llandrillo. They have been chosen because of their hard work and commitment to their studies, and because of their excellent attainment.

"Their achievements will be celebrated tonight in front of family and friends, tutors and sponsors".

"Tonight, each achiever will receive a trophy and a cheque worth £100, thanks to the generous sponsorship of business people and organisations.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank our talented staff for their dedication and our sponsors for their continued generous support. Congratulations to all of our 2019 student achievers."

Commenting on the success of this year's students, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai CEO Dafydd Evans said: "it's been a brilliant night tonight and one that celebrates the successes of our students here at Coleg Llandrillo, they all deserve it.

"We are very grateful to our sponsors who have supported us and to all the staff who worked hard to set this night up."

Mr Evans also paid tribute to one of the college's other former bosses and Cartrefi Conwy chairman - Huw Evans OBE. A moment of silence was held in tribute to the 68-year-old who passed away recently.
