Recently formed action group the Friends of Mostyn Street are living up to their aim of returning Llandudno’s High Street to its former glory by bringing back late night shopping in the town centre in the run up to Christmas.
They are calling on local businesses to get involved, join the fun and create a festive atmosphere for local shoppers during the first Noel late night shopping experience for many years.
The four-night Christmas shopping event will take place each evening from Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 December, with stores and cafes open until 8pm.
The aim is to liven up the bleak midwinter, create a warm, Christmas atmosphere for shoppers, increase footfall for town centre businesses and ensure beautiful Christmas window displays. All of this will happen through the active participation of local shops – giving Llandudno a truly magical feel for Christmas.
All kinds of shops and businesses are welcome to take part, with a number of activities planned to encourage participation, including a £250 top prize for a best Christmas window or frontage competition sponsored by Llandudno Town Council.
This will include the presentation of a historic trophy, with other great prizes for runners up. Businesses can also take part in a free Merry Mostyn Street Christmas Trail going around the various venues involved.
Businesses will also be encouraged to hold events themselves, and other venues such as churches and Llandudno Library will be hosting choirs and other activities.
The sign-up deadline is Friday, 17 November, with decorations ideally in place by 1 December.
Gini Rivers of the Friends of Mostyn Street commented: “Friends of Mostyn Street was founded as a positive group focused on celebrating and boosting our town centre and our plan for late night Christmas shopping is a further step on the road to restoring Mostyn Street to its rightful place at the top of the (Christmas) tree.
“Our plans also hark back to the Christmas shopping experience many locals remember from the 80s and 90s. They also form part of 'Three Steps to Christmas' in Llandudno, which will begin with the Christmas Extravaganza on 16-19 November followed by the Christmas Parade on 2 December, then our late night shopping experience.
“This is a golden opportunity to make Llandudno a magical annual destination in the run up to Christmas, while also generating much needed business for local retailers and hospitality venues. We are determined that none of these four evenings will be a silent night for either locals, visitors or businesses!”
