Welsh Government inspectors are quizzing Conwy County Borough Council about their proceedures following the debacle over their lease of a building which cannot be used.

In details reported in the Pioneer yesterday, Welsh Government's auditors are examining the types of processes and checks that the council put in place when they sign contracts, such as the long term lease on the factory building in Mochdre.

According to North Wales Live, the bill to the public purse is said to be approaching £1m and still the building on the Mochdre Trading Estate cannot be used for their intended purpose due to the nature and strength of the factory floor.

The building was earmarked for the storage and use of heavy good vehicles.

Following an internal council report which wasn't issued to the public due to 'commercially sensitive' information and concerns about identifying the officers involved in the decisions made, Welsh Government have taken steps to review the processes for managing projects, contracts and their arrangements for the supply of goods and services.

At this time, Welsh Government have said they are not investigating the specific details of the Mochdre lease but are reserving the right to open up lines of enquiry into the deal if new information is discovered.

Conwy Council said it welcomed feedback from Welsh Government and in a previous statement to cabinet, Leader Councillor Sam Rowlands said the situation relating to the managing of the Mochdre lease was "sobering".
