A girls' college football team was recently involved in a thrilling 5-5 draw with their Manchester United counterparts.

The Grŵp Llandrillo Menai Girls' Football Academy team, which comprises the most talented footballers from Coleg Llandrillo and Coleg Menai, took on their high-flying adversaries in the AOC (Association of Colleges) colleges' league at Eccles Sixth Form College, where the Manchester United Foundation Academy is located.

One of the students, Fflur Williams, 17 from Llangernyw, scored a memorable hat-trick on the day. The North Wales side were "thoroughly delighted" with the result, although it was slightly bittersweet, as their Lancashire opponents equalised with the last kick of the game!

There are eight teams in the league from across North Wales and the north west of England.

Fflur also plays for Llandudno Ladies FC, and is studying on the Level 3 Sport Performance and Excellence at Coleg Llandrillo's Rhos-on-Sea campus.

She said on her return, "It was an amazing feeling to score a hat-trick against a Manchester United side. It was such a tight game, and with their last minute equalizer, we were disappointed not to win the match. The college's network of sporting academies have helped me improve my fitness levels considerably and developed me as a player. The course is brilliant too".

Liverpool-supporting Fflur, has been interested in football since junior school, where she used to play against the boys.

One of Fflur's tutors, Charlotte Walker-Jones, who is the Level 2 co-ordinator for Sport (Performance and Excellence) at Coleg Llandrillo, said, "We are really pleased to see our girls get a result against such a high profile team. Fflur was exceptional on the day and I predict a glittering career for her".

The college's next fixture isn't any easier, as they are away to Liverpool FC Girls' Academy.

AoC sport leagues are open to member colleges as well as schools, academies and training providers. There are currently more than 1,500 teams competing in the following competitions: badminton, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's football, men's, women's and mixed hockey, netball, rugby league, and rugby union.
