Coleg Llandrillo's Beauty Therapy department has set up a cosmetic camouflage service to provide support to people seeking to mask scars or other skin anomalies such as tattoos, birth marks and bruising.

It aims to help alleviate the psychological, physical and social effects that an altered image can have on someone's well-being, by the simple application of specialised skin camouflage products.

The treatment also aims to instruct the client on self-application, so that the techniques used may be applied at home after the initial college session.

Treatment may include the covering of: tattoos, scarring (as a result of, accident, injury, surgery, acne, self-harming), hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, excessive redness, bruises and portwine stains.

The Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-up Studies students undertake the 'Cosmetic Camouflage' unit as part of their main qualification.

One of the students, Mollie Evans from Old Colwyn said: "As a make-up artist, it is useful to have these additional skills. I have really enjoyed learning several new techniques in order to mask scars and blemishes".

"We have had a range of clients attend already. For example, one person was delighted to be able to cover their tattoos when they were going to a formal function".

Tutor Sue Bluff said: "We are offering this as a help and support service for anyone who wants to access it, but only for a limited time".

"We will also advise clients on the best products available and teach them how to apply the make-up themselves. It is also a treatment offered by a camouflage therapist, who people can be referred to by a GP".
