A devastated cat owner has launched a fundraising appeal to help bring the person responsible for the death of his beloved pet to justice after she was shot with an air rifle in a quiet North Wales neighbourhood.
Dave Jones, from Deganwy, says he has been left “heartbroken and angry” following the death of his six-year-old cat Luna, who suffered catastrophic internal injuries after being shot on the afternoon of Friday, April 17.
Now, he is raising money to offer as a reward for information that leads to a conviction, in the hope someone will come forward.
The incident is believed to have happened between midday and 3pm in the Llwyn Estyn and Tyr Estyn area, including the cul-de-sac known as the Hammerhead, just off Albert Drive.
Describing the final hours of Luna’s life, Mr Jones said the day had started like any other, with the family cat enjoying the spring sunshine.
“I was in the garden and watched her head off exploring as she always did,” he said. “She came back about 15 minutes later, which wasn’t unusual, and went inside. I didn’t think anything of it.”
But when he returned indoors a short time later, he found Luna in distress.
“She was lying by her scratching post crying. I tried to pick her up and she yelled and spat, which was not like her at all. She was clearly in pain and could barely move.”
Fearing she may have been hit by a car, Mr Jones rushed Luna to the vets. An X-ray later revealed the shocking truth.
“They told me she’d been shot with an air rifle. The pellet had gone through her chest and lodged in her abdomen. I just couldn’t believe it.”
Luna was transferred to a 24-hour veterinary clinic for overnight care. Initially, there were signs of hope when she returned home the following day.
“She seemed more like herself—walking around, scratching the furniture, even telling us off like she usually would,” he said. “I really thought she was going to be okay.”
However, her condition quickly deteriorated, and she was rushed back for emergency surgery. Late that night, Mr Jones received the call he had been dreading.
“They told me the damage was too severe. The pellet had gone right through her body and caused multiple internal injuries. There was nothing they could do.”
Luna was put to sleep while under anaesthetic.
Mr Jones described Luna as a “lovely, talkative, playful and harmless” cat whose life had been “cruelly ended”.
“We are absolutely devastated,” he said. “To think someone could do this in our own neighbourhood—it’s just unimaginable.”
Determined to seek justice, he has now set up a fundraising page to build a reward pot for information leading to the identification and conviction of those responsible. If no conviction is secured, the money will be donated to the Cats Protection.
“Someone knows who did this,” he added. “If this encourages just one person to come forward, then it will be worth it.”
North Wales Police have been approached for comment.
