From care home to comedy icon on the Bay's seafront

Residents from a Colwyn Bay care home made the most of the sunshine with a special seaside trip to see the town’s newest attraction – the statue of Terry Jones.

Four residents from MHA Coed Craig, accompanied by staff, took the short walk to the beach to visit the recently unveiled tribute to the much-loved comedian, who was born in the town.

The bronze statue, depicting Jones as the famous “nude organist” from Monty Python’s Flying Circus, has already proved hugely popular, drawing large crowds and long queues since it was revealed last week.

With the weather on their side, the group enjoyed a relaxed day by the sea, joining visitors lining up to catch a glimpse of the statue and snap a photo.

Activity coordinator Hayley Williams said the outing was a spontaneous decision that turned into a memorable experience for everyone involved.

“It was a spontaneous trip to Colwyn Bay beach but one that we all really enjoyed,” she said. “I was aware of the new statue and decided to make that part of the visit.

“The beach is around a 10-minute walk from MHA Coed Craig, and with the weather being so nice it turned into a lovely trip.

“Our residents loved it and were very impressed with the statue. The beach was really busy, and we had to queue to see it, but once we got there it was worth it.”

The visit was rounded off in classic seaside style, with ice creams all round as residents soaked up the atmosphere.

MHA Coed Craig provides residential and dementia care for up to 45 people, and staff say they are already planning more trips so other residents can enjoy the popular new landmark celebrating one of Colwyn Bay’s most famous sons.
