Drivers warned after overweight vehicle forces bridge closure

Drivers are being urged to follow weight restrictions on the historic Menai Suspension Bridge after an overweight vehicle triggered a fresh closure.

North Wales Police issued the warning after the vehicle crossed the bridge earlier today, forcing it to shut while engineers carried out urgent safety inspections. The bridge has since reopened, but only once it was confirmed safe.

The incident caused disruption for motorists across Anglesey and the mainland, with traffic diverted and delays reported as people were forced to find alternative routes.

Police say the closure could have been avoided and are reminding drivers that a strict 7.5-tonne weight limit remains in place on the bridge.

The Menai Suspension Bridge, one of the most iconic crossings in Wales, has faced a turbulent period in recent years. It was closed for several months in 2022 following concerns over its structural integrity, before reopening with restrictions in place to protect the ageing structure.

Since then, ongoing maintenance and monitoring have been required to ensure the safety of the crossing, with further long-term strengthening work planned.

Officers say ignoring the weight limit not only risks damaging the bridge but also creates unnecessary disruption for thousands of people who rely on it daily for work, school and essential travel.

A spokesperson said safety remains the top priority and urged drivers, particularly those operating larger vehicles, to check their routes carefully and use alternative crossings where required.

With the bridge already subject to ongoing maintenance and future works, police say compliance with restrictions is essential to avoid further closures — and the knock-on impact they have on communities on both sides of the Menai Strait.
