101 Hours, 105 Miles – Gareth runs for Veterans’ support

A member of North Wales Police staff who is also a former RAF veteran and Royal Marine recruit has completed a challenge to raise funds for charity.

Last week Gareth Shilton, North Wales Police’ Force Physical Training Instructor ran one mile every hour for 101 hours between Police Headquarters in Colwyn Bay and Eirias Park.

Project 101 saw Gareth raise funds for Woody’s Lodge – a social hub which guides veterans to the help and support they need to re-engage with their families and communities. The charity has several bases across the country including one at Eirias Park in Colwyn Bay.

Gareth said: “Back in 2020 I completed the Shoggins Challenge for Combat Stress; inspired by David Goggins’ 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours.

“I reimagined it as one mile every hour for 48 hours, with an extra mile every 24 hours completed – plus one for the Queen. That totalled 51 miles in 48 hours so I thought now is the time to double it, and Project 101 was born.

“I’ve completed a total of 105 miles – the equivalent of 4 complete marathons and I even did part of the challenge wearing Halloween costumes.

“This isn’t just about endurance – it’s about resilience, remembrance and raising vital funds for Woody’s Lodge who provide crucial support for those who have served.”

Deputy Chief Constable Nigel Harrison said: “Gareth’s determination and resilience is incredible and I, on behalf of the whole force would like to congratulate him on completing this fantastic challenge.”

Gareth’s challenge began at just after 7pm on Wednesday 29th October and was completed during the early hours of Monday 3rd November.
