Sunday 22 November - The Sunday next before Advent - St Cecelia’s Day

Choral Evensong this week is for the last Sunday after Trinity – often called the Sunday next before Advent - and it’s taken from The Book of Common Prayer of The Church in Wales (1984).

The choir of Chichester Cathedral sing the appointed Psalms 149 and 150, whilst the choir of New College, Oxford sing the canticles – especially written for the New College choir by Herbert Howells’s.

Today is also the Feast Day of St Cecilia, the Patron Saint of Music, so in honour of that fact, the anthem is “Blest Pair of Sirens” by Hubert Parry and is sung by the choir of Westminster Abbey.

The Office Hymn “Father hear the prayer we offer” and the hymn “Love Divine” are sung by the choir of Gloucester Cathedral. The service commences with “Saraband” from six pieces for the organ by Herbert Howells, played by Robert Sharpe on the organ of Truro Cathedral; and the closing voluntary is “Paean” from Six Pieces for Organ by Herbert Howells, played by Graham Barber on the organ of Hereford Cathedral.

So join me Canon Quentin Bellamy in our service of Choral Evensong for the Sunday next before Advent.
