Venue Cymru to go red for theatres' Global Day of Action

September 30, 2020 - 1408 views

Tonight Venue Cymru will shine brightly in red at its beautiful, unique site on Llandudno’s Sea Front as part of the now global ‘Light in In Red’ campaign.

The North Wales facility is a pillar on the touring circuit for live theatre, gigs, comedy and opera to name but a few.

The multifunctional venue is also a versatile events facility for large scale conferences. Venue Cymru’s doors remain closed for live events amid the Covid-19 situation we’ve all found ourselves in.

However, its facilities are currently supporting the local community in its new role as a temporary Enfys Field Hospital.

“The impact of the pandemic has been tragic to so many venues and colleagues within the industry. We have joined in with several national and European campaigns to create awareness of the situation.

"Venues have had to announce closures, and creatives within our industry have been left out of work. We have joined in with this campaign, and with them have lit our venue in red, twice over the past few months." Says Marketing Manager, Richard Jones.

In July, #LightItInRed trended third on twitter. The illuminated buildings were a symbol that venues were ‘Standing By’ for when the time is right for reopening.

In August, the campaign messaging changed to #WeMakeEvents. The event was held to raise awareness for those UK’s industry professionals, as well as the chain of suppliers associated to live events who have been unable to work since March.

The theatre and events industry is vital, it contributes billions of pounds each year to the UK economy as well as playing an important role in wellbeing and community cohesion

The Light it in Red campaign says “We want our future to continue, to create millions of memories with the stories to match - it’s what we do best. This industry creates millions of memories with millions of stories, stories that are told and retold to friends and families around the world.”

The campaign is being run by a large and growing industry collective of trade bodies, businesses and freelancers affected by the shutdown all working together. It spans online and social messaging, video, and legal outdoor events to gain media attention.

Venue Cymru was selected as one of 60 sites across the UK to create a ‘Beam of Light’ to further draw attention to the number of difficulties across the industry. As well as the red lights on the building, anyone local to Llandudno will be able to see this in the sky over Llandudno.

Venue Cymru and Theatr Colwyn will be putting their images on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, please join us, and share your own images using the hashtags #LightItInRed #WeMakeEvents.

The two buildings owned and operated by Conwy County Borough Council will be ‘red’ from 8pm until 11pm (from 9pm at Theatr Colwyn) to coincide with the movement, globally.
