Care home staff from across North Wales started to receive their COVID-19 vaccinations at Llandudno’s Rainbow Hospital in the premises of Venue Cymru today.

This is the second week of the vaccination programme and just under 1,000 care home staff have been invited by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to receive the jab in its first mass vaccination centre.

Alison Cowell, Assistant Area Director for Central (Children), said: “Throughout the planning process, the primary consideration has been to deliver the vaccine safely to those who need it most as quickly and efficiently as possible. Care home staff are in one of the initial priority groups for the COVID-19 vaccination, so today is another momentous day here in Llandudno.”

Sandra Mayhew, a care home worker from Denbighshire, said: “I’m very relieved to have had the vaccine, I think it will make a huge difference. It’s been months of trying to keep away from people so you don’t take COVID-19 to the care home.

“It really has been life limiting. It will be wonderful when everyone’s had the vaccine and we can have our freedom again.”

Front line health care staff are also being vaccinated this week at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and the first care home residents are to receive their vaccine as part of a pilot in North Wales tomorrow.
