A long established Colwyn Bay music festival which has attracted visitors and artists from right around the world kicks off tonight after tickets quickly sold out.

Uke-A-Bay, which runs in various locations across the town starts tonight (Friday) at the Tape Arts Centre in Old and launches a whole weekend of live music with a distinctive ukulele flavour.

In its sixth year organisers are proud to be keeping the event has been kept free thanks to the generosity of The Bay of Colwyn Town Council and many of the event supporters. Disappointed fans who have missed out on tickets still have the opportunity to hear music at a number of local pubs.

Uke-a-Bay will play out of local pubs including The Pavillion, The Station and The Madoc.

The event has managed to get an excellent reputation for bringing some of top talent to the area and this year’s lineup includes blues artist Manitoba Hal who has forged a career as one of the Canada's most preeminent roots and blues multi-instrumentalists.

With 14 recordings under his own name and appearances on countless others, guitarist, ukulele master and singer-songwriter Manitoba Hal is a musical renaissance man.

His appearance at Theatr Colwyn tomorrow promises to be a real treat and another visit to Uke-a-Bay from this very popular musician.

Also another popular musician who is a firm favourite with Uke-a-Bay fans is Phil Doleman Phil’s whose love of vintage blues and old-time music shines through as he blows the dust off obscure old songs.

Phil’s amazing knack of taking original songs which blend perfectly with the classics make most audiences believe them to be old songs that passed them by.

Phil will be hosting a special Jug Band workshop at Spyce on Rhiw Road along with Josh Asker who will be getting ukulele players to an intermediate level. There is also a series of special workshops from the fabulous Christine Turner, Mark Gallagher and Manitoba Hal Broland.

It promises to be an unmissable three days of music and celebration and we will be reflecting on it across Bayside Radio. To hear our special podcast click here.
