Rydal Penrhos School welcomed Marylebone Cricket Club for their prestigious annual fixture last week.

The contest originally began in the 1900’s and proved to be another fantastic occasion once again, with the school’s aspiring cricketers performing well in the face of older and more experienced opposition.

MCC set a target of 171 from their time in the middle as the rain just held off, with Year 12 sports scholar Owen Reilly the pick of the Rydal Penrhos bowlers during his eight-over spell.

The Welsh youth international finished with figures of 1-9 to continue his excellent start to the campaign, with Arran Sen, Joe Gardener, Jack Jones and Michael Thomas also showing promise with the ball.

With conditions favouring the fielders during the afternoon, the school’s batting order did not manage to reach their required total in a narrow defeat, but there were plenty of reasons to be optimistic ahead of a busy summer term of fixtures across all age groups.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “This is always a difficult fixture to play so early in the season but there was lots of promise shown and the team can go into their upcoming fixtures in good spirits.

“We are very proud of our associated with such an organisation as Marylebone Cricket Club, with their foundation coaching hub based here at Rydal Penrhos, and this fixture is something that really aids our young cricketers considerably in terms of their ability to perform against stern and experienced competition.”
