Members of the Armed Forces community and their families are getting set for a pioneering water sports and life enhancing event down at Porth Eirias this Sunday, 23rd September.

Over 200 people with forces connections are expected to take part in ‘About Turn’ a special event promoting well-being and mindfulness through participation in activities as diverse as watersports, art and creative writing. The event has been organised by the CSVC Veteran’s Hub.

The day has also been set up to help ex-service personnel become more familiar with the communities they are living in, highlighting rewarding pursuits such volunteering along with the many recreational activities which they might not be familiar with in Conwy and across North Wales.

Jason Palmer of CSVC said he has was looking forward to a fantastic family day. “This is going to be a great finale to the end of the season here in Colwyn Bay.”

“I’m really looking forward to this being an event that will not only be a lot of fun for everyone taking part but also help ex-forces friends and colleagues get a glimpse of what the North Wales community can do to for them and what they can do for their community in return”.

“Sometimes leaving the forces can be quite challenging and stressful after years of living a very different life and then suddenly everything changes. Our intention is to try and help people make adjustments to life in their new communities and provide support to move forward in the most positive way.”

During the ‘About Turn’ day families will have the opportunity to experience taster sessions in Sailing, Windsurfing, Kayaking, Stand Up Paddle-Boarding and Power-boating.

Inside the main Porth Eirias building those attending can experience taster sessions in Art, Creative Writing and Mindfulness with the opportunity to sign up for a free course as part of a Health and Wellbeing Programme starting 8th October.

Those attending will also get the opportunity to find out about other free Programmes including a Mental Health First Aid Course and the Veterans Community Garden Project.

“I’m looking forward to the community day being a launch pad for the many free programmes available this Autumn”, said Jason. “We will be piloting some new ideas and evaluating them with a view to this being a long-term programme which would be available throughout the year not just in Conwy but potentially right across the country”.
