Conwy County Borough Council have just revealed which companies will be responsible for building the new Colwyn Bay Pier.

The contracts to construct the new truncated pier have been announced after tenders and bids were invited earlier this year. This projectwas divided into two parts - refurbishing the cast iron and reconstructing the truncated pier with some work to the forecourt and prom.

Cllr Brian Cossey is Chairman of the Pier Project Board, he said: “Building a truncated pier was one of the conditions of being allowed to dismantle the old unstable structure.

"It’s been a long journey and I'd like to extend my thanks to retired councillors Dilwyn Roberts and Phil Edwards who played a huge part in the early stages of this project.

“I’m pleased that at long last we have arrived at this stage; by awarding these contracts we can at last move on and finalise this matter.”

The Council has awarded the contract to reconstruct the pier to Grosvenor Construction a specialist building conservation company based in Kinmel Bay.

The contract to refurbish the cast iron has been awarded to Calibre Metalwork specialists in metalwork conservation, restoration and replication.

Council Leader, Cllr Sam Rowlands, said: “I’m happy to support this. I’m pleased to see progress and, thanks to the good work of the councillors and officers involved, the new pier will be built without the need for additional money, as the funding is within the existing maintenance budget.”

Work will start on site later this summer and is expected to take about 30 weeks.
