The Welsh are being urged to ‘Make Toast Not Waste’ as figures reveal Wales wastes 1million slices of bread a day, equivalent to 42,000 slices EVERY HOUR.  Alongside these shocking figures, a new consumer poll of UK adults aged 18-34, commissioned by Love Food Hate Waste shows:

Almost seven in 10 (69%) of respondents admit to throwing away bread on a weekly basis

One in four (26%) people admit to knowing you can freeze bread, but don’t do it

Three in five (62%) think if they froze bread, they could cut the amount they bin

The results support previous research  showing that if everyone in Wales wasted on average three fewer slices of bread a week- the nation’s bread waste mountain would be eliminated. This is why Love Food Hate Waste is calling on citizens to get behind the food waste fight and reduce their waste by freezing bread to make toast straight from frozen.

The results also showed that over half of the UK (56%) eat bread at least 4 days a week, with just under a third (31%) eating it every day. The majority of individuals eat bread for breakfast and lunch, with only 19% eating it at dinner and 23% as a snack.

When learning that it takes a year to produce bread from field to fork, three in five (61%) respondents showed that they were environmentally conscious, saying that they would be more likely to freeze bread to reduce the amount they waste.

Sarah Clayton, Love Food Hate Waste said: “Love Food Hate Waste’s latest campaign, ‘Make Toast Not Waste’ is looking to help people waste less bread as a whopping 1 million slices of bread are thrown away every day in Wales. Half of this waste is a result of people not getting around to using it in time.

We can all do our bit to bin less bread by popping it in the freezer to keep it for much longer, and you can even use bread straight from the freezer to make toast, without needing to defrost it first. We’ll be sharing some mouth-watering toast-topper recipes that we hope will inspire people to Make Toast Not Waste, and in doing so, will be a positive step towards reducing the amount of food that gets binned from our homes each day.”
