After so much success in Wales in Bloom, representitives from Colwyn Bay could hardly contain their excitement after receiving a Gold in the prestigous ceremony held late last week in Belfast.

The town picked up the award in the Large Town category after months of work and a series of competitions held regionally in Wales. Colwyn Bay was proud to have hosted the Wales in Bloom awards ceremony towards the end of the summer.

Britain in Bloom is recognised across the UK as a symbol of excellence in community gardening, strong community spirit and pride of place. Registered groups benefit from:

  • Guidance and support on gardening for that ‘wow’ factor, as well as for maximum benefit to the community and the environment
  • An annual visit by an experienced Britain in Bloom judge, who provides tailored feedback, tips and advice to build on your group’s progress
  • Recognition of achievement for all the hard work that your teams have carried out through the year
  • Membership to a nationwide network of passionate community gardeners, with access to networking opportunities in your area.

What kind of things do Bloom groups do?

Community groups of all sizes can take part in this nationwide competition, from small villages to large cities. Groups choose to do activities that benefit their local area. This might include:

  • Greening up a grey and disused space with local people
  • Creating and caring for public community gardens
  • Inspiring people from across the community to enjoy the benefits of gardening
  • Helping to create school gardens and school food-growing initiatives
  • Sowing wildflower meadows, wildlife habitats and maintaining conservation areas
