Dramatic turn of events sees new council leader

Conwy County Borough Council has a new Leader after a turbulent few weeks which saw an unusual turn of events following the sacking of a well-respected councillor.

Sam Rowlands was sacked from his post as Cabinet Member for Finance by the former leader Gareth Jones after being accused of introducing opposition members into the council’s administration and discussing it's leadership.

Cllr Rowlands claims that this was done to round support for essential policy and to be a more collegiate and co-operative cabinet. Cllr Jones called the move ‘a betrayal’.

Today the tables were turned during a special meeting when Cllr Jones lost a vote of no confidence and Cllr Rowlands was subsequently voted by colleagues to the key post.

It is expected that Cllr Rowlands will be spending time to restructure the cabinet to best meet the needs of Conwy residents amid the many financial pressures placed on the council as a result of a less than satisfactory budget settlement with Welsh Government.
