A Conwy Council Cabinet Member is urging local residents to respond to the annual canvass.
Cllr Anne McCaffrey, Cabinet Member for Democracy, said, “It’s 100 years since some British women were first guaranteed the right to vote, and in this anniversary year no-one can be in any doubt of the importance of voting and having your voice heard.
“Local democracy is how our communities are shaped and it’s really important that Conwy residents do not lose their voice on matters that affect them.”
Household Enquiry Forms are currently hitting doorsteps across the county borough. The aim is for residents to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for that address is correct, and if it isn’t, to make any necessary changes so that people don’t lose their right to vote.
Cllr McCaffrey wants people to understand why it’s important to complete the Form, she said, “We have to check the Register of Electors every year and we would ask everyone to take action as soon as they receive their form – please don’t put it to one side and forget about it. When an election is held, residents only have a vote if they are on the register so it is vital that you respond.”
Iwan Davies, Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer agrees, he said, “Make sure you respond as soon as you can, and encourage people you know to do the same, so that you don’t need to be sent a reminder. Last year, we had to send out over 17,000 reminders, which is a significant cost that can be avoided if you respond before 23 August 2018.”
