New cases of COVID-19 have increased significantly in just one day according to data from Public Health Wales today.

In the past day 389 new cases have been reported in contrast to 281 cases yesterday. Sadly there have been two new deaths.

The vast majority of cases are in the South Wales counties which are now in local lockdown. However recent cases in Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire are causing concern as the number of cases per 100,000 of population are growing.

In North Wales there were 28 new cases. Denbighshire had 8 cases with 5 cases each in Conwy, Anglesey and Flintshire. Wrexham reported 3 cases along with 1 in Gwynedd.

During the last week Conwy and Denbighshire reported significantly more cases in the population versus the North Wales average and Public Health Wales warned yesterday that it was closely monitoring the situation with a view to imposing local restrictions or lockdown should the need arise in the days to come.

However speaking earlier on BBC Breakfast First Minister Mark Drakeford said at this stage Welsh Government could see "no case" for extending local lockdowns to other areas in Wales. Figures would be followed closely and kept under daily review, he said.

Tomorrow sees the start of all Wales measures to slow down the spread of the virus.

Hospitality businesses will have to provide table service only from Thursday at 6pm and all off-licences, including supermarkets, will have to stop selling alcohol at 10pm.

The First Minister also announced a new £500 payment to support people on low incomes who are asked to self-isolate if they have coronavirus and strengthened regulations to ensure employers support people who need to self-isolate.
