Colwyn Bay Crematorium officially opened their Children’s Memorial Garden on Monday.
Local parents gathered to mark the occasion with a ribbon cutting and a cheque presentation to Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity which supports families affected by the death of a baby.
The donation of £7000 was made from the crematorium as part of the ICCM Recycling of Metals Scheme.
The memorial garden includes a special owl post box, donated by Sands. The post box is for children and their families to post letters to people they have lost, and features in a story book “Dear Mum…” about Dora the mouse, who expresses her feelings by writing letters. The garden also features a central sanctum for ashes and two flowerbeds for scattering ashes.
The garden was designed with support from Columbaria, to create a comforting environment for families to take time and reflect.
“You can’t put into words the feeling of the loss of a child. The garden has been created as a place of peace and remembrance, open at all times for those who want to use it,” said Cllr Donald Milne, Cabinet Member with responsibility for the crematorium and cemeteries.
“We’re very grateful to the families who have supported this, and to AC Lambert & Sons, Dilwyn Tudor Davies, Meredith Jones and Tom Owen & Son funeral directors for their generous donations, which have made this garden possible.”
