The artwork on the hoardings surrounding the Conwy County Borough Council Coed Pella development has been awarded runner up position in the Considerate Constructor Scheme National Hoarding Competition.

The ‘Back to the Future’ themed hoardings focused on the rich architectural heritage to be found along Conway Road.

Young people working with local artist Mai Thomas developed the designs, influenced by the decorative details on both the exterior and interiors of local buildings. Mai Thomas was born and brought up in North Wales and her work has always been influenced directly by the diversity in the local landscape. Schools and groups who participated in the project include Ysgol Eirias, Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn, Ysgol Sant Joseff, Ysgol Nant y Groes, Colwyn Bay youth group

Local companies View Creative and Powlsons then worked with all the designs to produce the artwork for the hoardings.

Cllr Louise Emery, Cabinet Member for Economic Development said, “We’re delighted that the inspirational designs on the hoardings have been recognised in this way. The new office development in Colwyn Bay is set to play a key role in the continuing regeneration of the town and the artwork was a fitting theme.”

Phil Marsden, from Muse Developments, the Council’s development partner for the project, said, “It was great to have young people’s input in such an important part of their and the town’s future. To be a runner up in a National Award is testament to the skills of everyone involved in their design, creation and print.”

Malcolm Robertson, Senior Contracts Manager from Bowmer and Kirkland, said “We recognise the importance of engaging with communities local to our construction projects. We are delighted that this inspired artwork produced by local school children which tells a story linking the past to construction of the future has been acknowledged in this way.”
