Colwyn Bay FC have announced today that 19-year-old defender Alex Downes has agreed terms with the club following his release from Chester FC.

The full back who comes from Rhyl, was awarded his first contract by Chester last summer after making his league debut for them as a substitute against Boreham Wood in the April, but spent the last six months of the past season on loan at Colwyn Bay where he made 20 appearances and scored two very good goals from set pieces at Colne and Glossop.

He suffered a nasty ankle injury in the Glossop game and was out of action for several weeks, but had already shown his potential.

Bay boss Craig Hogg said: “We are pleased to confirm that another member of last season’s playing squad has agreed terms.

“Alex had a really productive loan spell with us at Evostik West, acquitting himself very well.

“He is a North Wales lad who will soon be moving to the Bay area and it pleases me a great deal that Alex has got an another opportunity to improve his football education, within the positive learning environment I feel we have here. We are looking forward to working him again.”

Alex, who was with Wrexham before joining Chester, commented: “I am delighted to have agreed terms with Colwyn Bay and to be playing under Craig and the rest of the management team for another season.

“Hopefully this season will be a successful one, for both the club and myself personally. I’m keen to kick on with my football as I feel I didn’t reach my full potential last season due a couple of injuries."

“I’m going to work extremely hard for everyone at the club and I’m looking forward to playing for the Bay again.”
