Breaking: Ferocious waves batter the North Wales coast

High waves and heavy offshore winds are battering the Bay of Colwyn this afternoon.

On the same day as the Isle of Man declared a major incident due to the weather, the North Wales coast is experiencing some of the stormiest seas in a number of years.

Plans to begin setting up the Wales Rally GB site at Porth Eirias have been put temporarily on hold until the weather calms.

Across Colwyn Bay, Old Colwyn and Rhos-on-Sea, high offshore winds turned a relatively calm morning into an afternoon frenzy of high waves.

The promenade at Old Colwyn which closed yesterday as a result of a yellow flood warning, closed again on the advice of North Wales Police. Ferocious waves begun crashing into the promenade from just after lunchtime.

The Isle of Man which sits just North of Colwyn Bay in the Irish Sea declared a major incident earlier as floods left people trapped in their homes.

Water was seen cascading down roads and streets damaging cars and property. The Environment Agency has issued dozens of flood warnings  across the country.

We’ll bring you more information as soon as we have it.
