Bay struggles after Prestatyn double in opening quarter

Colwyn Bay lost 3-1 at league leaders Prestatyn Town to suffer their second league defeat of their campaign in the Welsh league.

They gave themselves a mountain to climb when they conceded two goals in just over a minute inside the opening quarter of an hour and although Tom McCready pulled one back from the penalty spot, they couldn't pull themselves level and Prestatyn secured the points with a third goal in the last 10 minutes.

Colwyn Bay started the game quite well, forcing the first corner and a couple of early free kicks in the Prestatyn half which they couldn't capitalise on, but were rocked back by those two quick goals.

A chip over Bay's back four allowed Jack Kenny to run clear and beat Andy Coughlin, despite a suspicion of offside, and while the Bay were still recovering from that a ball in from the right ended with  Alex Jones whipping a low shot past the diving Coughlin for Prestatyn's second.

To their credit Bay regained their composure and Sion Edwards curled a shot narrowly wide before Tom McCready pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after a foul on Julian Williams.

The manager made a change at half-time to bring on another attacker (Toby Jones) and then brought on two more (Mitch Bryant and Damien Ketley) just after the hour, but they struggled to create scoring chances and the changes left themselves open at the back as Prestatyn counter-attacked with pace and purpose.

Andy Coughlin had to make a number of good saves to keep his side in the game, but was eventually beaten by Alex Jones' fine finish into the far bottom corner on 82 minutes to seal the result.

Manager Craig Hogg admitted it was a tough afternoon for his side. "The scoreline reflected who was the better team on the day," he said.

"Credit to Prestatyn/ They are well drilled and worked their system really well.It was a free swing today we went their with a plan, but that changed after a mad minute when we conceding those two goals.

"That was frustrating, because during the period prior to that we had looked comfortable and threatening.

"The game came back to life for us with the penalty and we went for it in the second half with all our attacking options on the pitch, even though it left us open to the counter-attack, but we couldn't find a way to get the ball into the right areas to hurt them.

"There are some positives. I thought Mike Williams was outstanding and Morgan Owen did exceptionally well for an 18-year-old thrown into a game like that.

"There were some good individual performances, but we didn't perform well enough as a team to get a result.

"We've had quite a tough run of fixtures with another to come on Tuesday, when we will have played all three current joint leaders in less than three weeks, but we move on and hopefully get points on the board in the next block of games."
