Bad weather creates havoc across Conwy

March 16, 2019 - 2268 views

After a week of bad weather on the North Wales coast and down the Conwy Valley, many parts of our community is on flood alert today.

Rivers are extremely high across the area and with more unsettled weather expected until the early hours of Sunday, Natural Resources Wales and the emergency services are asking residents to take precautions close to water and slow down on local roads.

In Deganwy bad flooding has been reported along the coast road and the River Conwy in Llanrwst is at an extremely high level having burst its banks. Experts say that levels are at their highest for many years.

Emergency services reported heavy flooding particularly around Betws-y-Coed with homes along the river affected. Drivers heading down the Conwy Valley on the A470 have been warned to expect delays, road closures and diversions as the day goes on.

There were heartbreaking scenes as the river burst its banks around Gwydir Castle after volunteers spent time assembling sandbanks to protect the grounds and gardens of this historic landmark.

The Met Office say that problems could be made worse by high winds across the afternoon and into Saturday evening with some outlying areas expected to receive ice and hail overnight into Sunday.

Currently there are a number of serious flood warnings in place with updates expected from Natural Resources Wales across Saturday. Stena Line and Irish Ferries have cancelled services and will continue to monitor the sitiation into Sunday.

Many thanks to Julie Fallon, Michael Roberts and Gwydir Castle for sharing their videos of Deganwy and Llanrwst with us today.
