Not only did artistic students from Coleg Llandrillo excel at the National Urdd Eisteddfod in Cardiff recently, the college's medal winners had their work displayed in the main Welsh Assembly building!

After an unparalleled success at county level where the college's Art and Design students claimed 14 gold medals, 17 silver medals and 5 bronze medals, at the National Urdd Eisteddfod finals, the students scooped five medals in a range of mixed media competitions.

The college garnered the most wins within Conwy county and 75% of the participating students qualified for the national finals.

The successful students at national level were: Jack Jefferson, 18 from Denbigh (gold medal in the 'Photography Colour Print' category); Elise Beardsall, 17 from Rhos-on-Sea (silver in '2D Drawing'); Catrin Lloyd Jones, 17 from Denbigh (silver in 'Craft Artefact') and Rachel Scullard, 17 from Old Colwyn and Molly Dugdale, 18 from Mochdre, who won silver and bronze medals respectively in the 'Ceramics' category.

Level 3 student, Jamie-Lee Beveridge-Hughes, 17 from Rhos-on-Sea, created a 3D ballet shoe to illustrate the pain and tiredness that can derive from dancing. She said:

"I was really surprised to get a gold medal at the county competition and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of exhibiting my work at the national finals".

Jamie-Lee has been dancing since she was 5-years-old and is now planning to be a photographer after her studies.

Coleg Llandrillo tutor Liz Prosser said: "This was an excellent opportunity for our students to take part and showcase their range of skills in a national competition, and celebrate their Welsh culture too.

"To have their pieces exhibited in the Senedd was a massive bonus".
