Cuts to funding put poolside sessions in the swim

There will be changes to free swimming sessions in Conwy county from the start of November as the result of funding cuts.

Welsh Government and Sport Wales have reviewed the free swimming initiative across Wales and have decided to change the scheme.  This means the council now only receives half the amount of funding and the current scheme will change.

In Conwy’s swimming pools from Monday, 4 November 2019 the new scheme will now offer one free swim session per week all year round for the over 60s or one free swim session for the under 16s.

Over 60s will be able take advantage of the scheme at Colwyn Bay Leisure Centre on Fridays between 8-9am or in Llandudno on Thursdays between 2.45-3.45pm.

Under 16s can head to the Colwyn Bay Leisure Centre on Sunday morning between 9-10am or Wednesday 1-2pm.

Councillor Louise Emery, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Leisure said: "Swimming can have a number of health benefits for individuals and communities, and our aim is to continue to make swimming accessible.”

"The free swimming initiative has given many Conwy residents the opportunity to access our swimming pools which, for some, may have not been possible without the scheme.

"We’re working with the staff at our swimming pools to minimise the impact of these national changes."
